How many times have you walked through the drug store, looking for safer shampoo or make-up, and have been really confused by the ingredient list? What does all of that mean, and more importantly, which are the ones that are harmful to your health?

There are over 1800 chemicals that are considered either dangerous or questionable which can be linked to cancer, developmental toxicity, hormone disruption, and/or infertility. 1400 of these ingredients have been banned in Europe (but not the US.) The personal care industry is a non-regulated industry and utilize many of these chemicals.

Interesting, but which are the ones you should avoid?

Beautycounter makes it easy for you to navigate these complicated waters by banning those 1800+ ingredients from their own line of personal care products while at the same time, maintaining high-performance.

If you want to see if your own products are safe, start by referencing The Never List Here, and avoid these top 17 found in many conventional products:

Why You should use face oils

The idea of applying oil to your face might seem counterintuitive and believe me, I had my doubts as well. But, face oils are a popular trend - that work!

Oils are not the same as serums and not the same as moisturizers. They are in a class by themselves.

Facial oils provide immediate and quick antioxidants to the skin, as well as essential vitamins to help strengthen and nourish. Face oils also help to replenish the skin with essential fatty acids, adding plump, glow and a healthy look to your complexion. As you age, it's more difficult to keep skin hydrated, which face oils are excellent at doing.

The thing is, not all facial oils are right for everyone, and your skin type will dictate what is the best blend for you.

The most important thing to consider is to never use synthetic oils, such as mineral oil, as these will clog your pores and provide no nourishment to your skin. It also may potentially be a toxin, which is why it is on our Never List. Synthetic oils also sit on top of skin, whereas natural plant-based oils are absorbed.

Use facial oils that are natural, omega-rich, and won't clog your pores. Some great suggestions are:

  • Argan oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Marula oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Hazelnut oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Olive oil

If you are uncertain which oil to try, and would rather use a pre-made blend, check out our perfectly perfected natural oils and select the blend right for your skin type.

Which facial oil is right for you?

What's Hiding in Your Make-up Bag?

You have finally made the decision to get healthier. You watch the food you eat, are sure to purchase in-season and organic when possible, and stay away from pesticides. You exercise and move. You feel you are doing great, and you are!

But then comes the matter of your make-up. I mean, do you think about the ingredient label like you do with food? Probably not. I know I didn't, and just wrongly assumed that the FDA kept toxins out of make-up and personal care products.

Sadly, that is not true.

Companies are allowed to use harmful ingredients and make their own judgements about safety.

Something you think might be as safe as make-up can contain the following:

  • lead
  • arsenic
  • cadmium
  • known endocrine disruptors
  • known carcinogens
  • known thyroid distuptors
  • and more

Heavy metals and toxins lurking in make-up products is a dirty little secret!

How do you keep yourself and your loved ones safe? There are a few things you can do.

First, bookmark the EWG's Skin Deep Database which lets you search over 70,000 products for safety ratings.

Second, you can shop for products that are EWG verified, such as Beautycounter.
EWG verified companies only allow ingredients in their products that are the best for your health based on all the latest science.

Third, never give your kids toy "junk" make-up from stores such as Justice, Claire's or play make-up kits. You don't know what is in them, and chances are, there are more dangerous toxins in them than not.
